How to Build a Fan Base - part 3 - 4 phases of gaining fans

Hey there!

Okay. Let's recap this wild ride we've been on together!

Part 1: I told you to forget chasing 10,000 randos and build 1,000 super fans instead! The math works! It's easier! It's saner!

Part 2: I teased you with stories of gamers crowdfunding $2.5M studios, museums raising $610M from 500 donors, and self-published authors landing Netflix deals!

You saw what becomes possible with super fans! And now you're sitting there thinking: “Okay, I’m sold! I want the dream-making super fans. But how?"

Well, I'm about to give you the 4-phase framework that takes you from "I have no fans" to "holy crap people are waiting for my launches!"

The 4 Phases of Super Fan Building

Think of this like a video game. You can't skip levels. You can't just jump to the final boss (because you’ll get your butt kicked). You gotta go in order or everything breaks!

Phase 1: Find Your Fans

In this phase you need to figure out:

WHO your fans actually are (not who you think they are) – Like, so specific it's almost creepy. Their fears. Their dreams. The exact words they use when they're frustrated.

WHERE they congregate (both online and in real life) – Are they on Reddit? Discord? At specific conferences? In Facebook groups? Hiding on Threads? At your local climbing gym?

WHAT they're searching for (the exact problems keeping them up at 3am) – Not "people who want to improve their business!" Be SPECIFIC! "Coaches drowning in client work who want recurring revenue but are terrified of adding MORE to their plate!"

Quick reality check: Can you describe your ideal fan SO specifically that you could spot them at a crowded party?

If not, Phase 1 is where you're stuck!

And guess what? This is exactly what we do in my Find Your First 100 Fans workshop! We build your custom fan profile, map where they congregate, and craft messages that make them go "OMG finally someone gets me!" But more on that in a sec!

Phase 2: Attract Them With the Right Incentive

Okay, you found your fans. You know where they hang out. Now you need to give them a reason to actually join your world!

Your incentive to join your mailing list needs to be:

Immediately useful (they can use it today)
Solves a real problem (not just "nice to have")
Shows your expertise (proves you know your stuff)
Makes them want more (teases your paid offerings)

As an example, I built the "Are You Accidentally Repelling Your Super Fans?" quiz.

Why? Because it's fun! It's shareable. It creates "oh crap" moments. And it naturally leads to "okay how do I fix this?"

That's a good incentive! Not "10 Tips to Grow Your Business" that could apply to anyone

Phase 3: Engage Them With Content That Matters

Congratulations! They joined your list!

This is where you build the relationship. Where you show up consistently. Where you give them content they actuallyY want! Where you make them feel seen, understood, and part of something.

This means:

  • Content buckets that serve different purposes (educate, inspire, connect, sell)
  • Email strategy that doesn't feel like you're just pitching constantly
  • Community building (even if it's just your email replies)
  • Showing up as a real human instead of a content robot

Most people skip this phase! They get someone’s email address and then they blast “buy my thing" immediately. And wonder why everyone unsubscribes.

Phase 3 is where casual subscribers become FANS!

Phase 4: Activate Them As Evangelists

This is the dream phase. The phase where your fans do the marketing for you, refer their friends without being asked, and show up to every launch with their wallets wide open.

But you can't SKIP to Phase 4!

You earn it by:

  • Creating amazing experiences (not just good products)
  • Building real community (not just a customer list)
  • Making them feel special (not just another transaction)
  • Giving them wins to share (transformation they can show off)

When you nail Phase 4? That's when the studio builds happen, the huge projects get funded, Netflix comes knocking. And it’s all possible because your fans want to make you successful! They’re invested in your wins!

Here's where most people are stuck

If I had to guess? You're stuck in Phase 1.

You know you need super fans! You know what becomes possible! But you're staring at the blank page thinking “Where do I even start?”

Here's the thing: You don't have to figure this out alone!

Let me help you with Phase 1

I built the Find Your First 100 Fans workshop specifically for people who are getting started.

Here's what we do together in this intensive, one-on-one strategy session:

Build your custom fan profile (not some generic buyer persona, your specific super fans)

Map where your fans congregate (online AND offline, so you're not wasting time on platforms where they don't exist!)

Craft the messages that make them say, “Finally, someone who gets me!"

You walk away knowing who your super fans are, where to find them, and what to say to get them onto your email list.

Not theory! Not inspiration! An actual "here's what to do Monday morning" roadmap!

Investment: $450

Your homework (because we always have homework)

Look at where you are right now!

Phase 1: Do you know exactly who your fans are and where they hang out?

Phase 2: Do you have an irresistible reason for them to join your world?

Phase 3: Are you showing up consistently with content that actually matters?

Phase 4: Are your people referring friends and championing your work?

Be honest. No judgment. Just clarity. Because you can't fix what you won't acknowledge.

And once you know where you're stuck? You can actually do something about it!
